One thing that had changed since my 2003 trip was that Rosy-faced Lovebird was on the ABA Checklist (and that I knew what that was). I met the group in Tucson and we spend the next week birding the hell out of the Sky Islands. I had a list of birds I had missed and a list of birds I needed to see again—second lifers I call them.

This time it’s a group of Griffon Vultures Gyps fulvus that have just arrived from the south. A Griffon Vulture ditches in the sea off Gibraltar and struggles to keep its head above the water Since 2003, Ruppell’s Vultures Gyps ruepelli , have been showing up with the Griffons.

If you have any doubts whether you want to see a Snares Penguin, you can read the species description, directly following, and drink in photos of their bright, droopy yellow eyebrows, bulbous dark-red bills with bare pink skin at the base, and peek at a group of the penguins, walking en masse within the thick island scrub.

These group dynamics are always hard to track, but this group seems particularly complex. Wicked, right? Any reason?

As I got closer to Geelong there were several groups of Black Swans in the shallows feeding. There are 104 of these artistic bollards and each group has a rabbit painted on it somewhere for children to find! The following bollards show a group of life-savers and one on the right appears to be carrying a Pacific Gull.

So, I can go right to the description of Larus canus heinei on page 78, but I need to scan the photo captions to find the gull depicted on pages 83 and 84. The pages are labeled on the left with the genus name (for example, Larus) and on the right with the brief title: Gulls. Browsing through this book is tough. Ivory Gull.
