The flocks of Black-headed Gulls were far away and huge, 500 to 2000, and it was quite a feat to keep one pair of eyes on one flock, the other pair busy detecting the next incoming flock. I managed to find one 3rd winter Great Black-backed Gull. Less than two years ago, I wrote here how I found the 4th GBBG for Serbia. I trust her count.

Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge : Open to migratory bird hunting (youth only). The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. This is an Urban Refuge !

For birders, the Wolongshan area is like a poorer cousin of Balangshan – due to the lower elevation, the bird species here are more common and thus less interesting. Some Chinese Babax waste part of their lives feeding chicks of Large Hawk Cuckoos, which parasitize the babax species.

Personally, I wish the species the best of luck in this endeavor. (Of Then again, why would anyone name a bird after a botanist, let alone one I only just made up right now? However, the fact that there are 30 subspecies seems to indicate that the species has a slightly overblown estimation of its own importance.

Greeney was recommended to me as a book I HAD to review by no less than three birding friends. I hesitated because a 496-page book about two skulky neotropical bird groups is a little intimidating. I also wondered if a book like this would be of interest to 10,000 Birds readers. The artwork is beautiful.

The two most prolific contributors, Pat and Tom, have been sharing their birding space in Costa Rica. The beats have now contributed more checklists than birds. During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species.
