Suddenly I saw a ground squirrel creeping up on the Bunting. Leaving the squirrel to feed on the very same grass stalk. And this turtle must be someone’s escaped pet, since Painted Turtles should not be found in the wild much beyond the southern U.S. BUM-bum, BUM-bum! And then, the giant beast lunged!

These are overgrown in steppe grasses and local sheep herders are subsidised by the authorities to bring their animals here to keep the grass short, prevent succession by bushes and manage the habitat for vulnerable Sousliks , or European ground squirrels. Yet, despite the grassland habitat looking good, the sheep numbers are low.

And of course, way too many chipmunks and squirrels and raccoons and turtles to count. In New York and Chicago, they’ve been pretty mundane—a White-tailed Deer here, an Eastern Cottontail rabbit there. Nothing, however, prepared me for the fauna that awaited last weekend at the Spring Wings festival in Fallon, Nevada.

A pair of European Turtle Doves on a wire, followed by two soaring Common Buzzards …. There wasn’t a single European souslik or ground squirrel ( Spermophilus cittelus ). Add into that picture that the last time I observed the endangered Saker Falcon in Serbia was here – but three years ago, when squirrels were still present.

On one occasion we saw a pair of Red Turtle Doves beside the fishing lake. It is also a good location for observing otters, squirrels and monitors. Black-naped Oriole. Walking beside the Pasir Ris Park Connector we watched otters playing in the water.
