For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). “Odd, me?” But the joke simply does not work then).

Birding Tanjung Aru Beach, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

Even better, just a few meters away from the food vendors, it is not too crowded, and the palm trees attract a number of birds, including two species of parrots. That is mainly the Philippines, as indicated by the species name lucionensis (Luzon is the Philippines’ biggest island). The first one is the Blue-naped Parrot.

Munia in Singapore

During our three weeks of birding in a variety of habitats around Singapore we encountered three species of Munia. We also have the occasional visit from Long-tailed Finch and Zebra Finch and these two species are easily found around the Broome area. They nipped around the reeds and grasses close to one of the water bodies.

Week 16: South Africa and Kruger National Park

So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. In the same first day plus a couple of hours, my Africa bird count is at 66 species. After three months in countries without woodpeckers, it was nice to find these Bennett’s Woodpeckers.
