He noted that this new bird had longer bills and “darker loral and auricular regions” than the mainland Brown-headed Nuthatch, and collected two of them for science. This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. Over the next few days, I found increasing numbers, goldfinches, juncos, white-throated sparrows. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor.

In science speak, this is named the optimal body mass hypothesis. Eurasian Tree Sparrows frequently find themselves out in the wild without a glass to drink from. Blue T**s, Great T**s) or are predators of their nests (Great Spotted Woodpecker). At least such a statement will not offend the species, I guess.

Species order follows the AOU Checklist of North American Birds up to the 2015 supplement (so warblers come before sparrows), with a variation– certain subspecies are treated as full species (Eurasian Teal, Western Willet, Audubon’s Warblers, Red Fox Sparrow, and more). . This is a project that clearly spanned decades.

Each spread presents two birds of a color–Red (Scarlet Tanager and Northern Cardinal), Pink (Greater Flamingo and Roseate Spoonbill), and so one, with the last spread presenting two colors–Black and White (Downy Woodpecker and Black-and-White Warbler).
