As a proof, two Dalmatian Pelicans are flying low above us, while a Bluethroat disappears into the nearby bush. Asia: Somewhere below that mysterious eagle, at the far shore of the lake, lies one Bengal Tiger … and further to the right – two more! These are my first wild tigers ever! The Sun is just rising. Four – at one stroke!

We saw lots of the usual Heron, Egret, Cormorant, and Pelican suspects. But this Bare-necked Tiger-Heron was a real treat for me. And the birds along the walk to the estuary weren’t bad, either: Looks like nesting time has arrived for this Golden-cheeked Woodpecker. Ditto for this handsome Amazon Kingfisher.

I had visited the park alone in early March and then with Grant later in the month, where we had our Tiger Snake encounter. Everything was going to be extinct – the condors, the whales, the Whooping Cranes , the elephants and tigers, the whole shebang, and that was even if we didn’t get nuked. We could do it!
