Clapper Rail , American White Pelican , Snowy Owl , Cackling Goose , Blue-winged Teal , Bald Eagle , Lark Sparrow , Clay-colored Sparrow , Pine Warbler , and Turkey Vulture are all good birds for the count. The Lark Sparrow was found by our sweeper team of Cesar Castillo, Carrie Laben, and David Ringer.

It was a dark and foggy ride into Nags Head Woods, the only forest of any sort on the islands, and we paused every few hundred meters and listened for owls. In these marshes lie sparrows of a sort that have never been reliable on the islands.

Brown Pelican - Though two have been reported to eBird since 2008 this bird is even more of a long shot than Black Vulture. Two of the four Lark Sparrows I have seen in Queens Two out of ten is not good enough, leaving me smack-dab on the Mendoza Line. I wish I had put three sparrows on my last list instead of three shearwaters.

Either way, the odds of actually getting a Brown Pelican in Queens are pretty low. 318 – Burrowing Owl , 16 May 2019: An unbelievable find and a thrilling chase, this bird at Big Egg Marsh was as as astonishing as it was unpredicted.

Thanks mostly to David Lindo, The Urban Birder, there are a few British bird groups touring the country every year now, even the BBC came to film the world famous Long-eared Owl gathering in the town of Kikinda with more than 700 birds in some winters. In some years, Spanish Sparrows were reported breeding inside White Storks nests in Sakule.

With a lack of waterfowl, I found four different owls, with Great Horned, Barn, Short-eared, and Burrowing all in the first 24 hours. There was a large population of Western Grebes on the lake.
