We’ll do this until the dawn breaks over eastern Montana. As lovely as the Sage Grouse were, our trip had another primary mission — to see the amazing, highly endangered black-footed ferret. Randy puts it in gear and returns to sweeping the spotlight across the night prairie, watching for green eyeshine, for more ferrets.

Muir, thankfully, was not the least interested in the smaller mammal, and only a little confused about why our walk had been interupted. She also told me that it isn’t legal for wildlife rehabilitators in Montana to do anything with bats except turn them straight over for testing anyway, which made me feel like a bit less of a heel.

Here in Montana I use an expansive definition of “yard” to put Barrow’s Goldeneye on my yard-list. He also includes a fun, if brief, section dedicated to the non-avians (butterflies and mammals, in this case) that he has photographed through his windows. Taking pictures through windows is not easy.

Though the climate of the area is described as mild, this needs to be understood in Montana terms. Mammals were mostly represented by Mule Deer and a handful of debatable Elk. Yes, the surrounding region is famous for its fruit crops, such as cherries and wine grapes. But yes, it also snowed on April 16 while we were there.
