When I see a band I imagine something slipping beneath it and trapping the bird, I’ve seen photos of birds with so many bands it looks like they’re wearing stockings, and then there’s the awful story of Violet , whose band eventually killed her. She was rescued, put back into her crate, and returned to the Raptor Trust.

Maybe it was raised by some caged birds in close proximity to humans, though I lack any proof of this theory whatsoever. Nanhui is also a good place to see the Eurasian Hoopoe (actually, once, my apartment was too – a hoopoe had somehow got in and had to be rescued by me from my excited cats – but that was more of a one-off event.

No human can divine what a mated pair of geese or eagles may feel for one another, but stories abound of birds,especially Canada Geese , who spurned all offers from members of the opposite sex for years after a mate was killed.
