The group has a worldwide distribution; 28 species living and two additional extinct. There is another area of the Queens County CBC where a team will also likely see Monk Parakeets , Myipsitta monachus , but I am seriously determined to count that bird for my area, Coastal Flushing, a section of northeast Queens, New York, that includes Whitestone, home of one of the loudest invasive bird species in the U.S. And cell towers.

Now and then individual catfish of various species hunt nearer the surface and larger catfish such as the American Channel Cat will take a duck or other water bird. We have seen Peregrine Falcons fly through circling flocks of shorebirds and Brown Goshawks attempt a kill, but generally they are able to escape by their constant circling. The Terek Sandpiper flagged in Japan was also present on the rocks! Soon it will go north and then we anxiously await its return later this year!

Mike’s comments regarding his recent stopover in Japan struck a chord that has been resonating within me for a week or two. Anyone with more than a couple of hours to kill could easily make a quick birding foray out from the airport. Forest species are likely to include the Banded Woodpecker and Black Drongo.
