A Yellow-crowned Parrot digs in. At night, we keep our eyes out for the passage of the neighborhood Barn Owl , oftentimes a Tropical Screech-Owl would hunt insects from a low perch on our almond tree. Sometimes this Merlin ‘s mate comes to check him out, but for most of the northern winter he hunts solo.

Emus roam the open areas, and surprisingly, various parrots, lorikeets or cockatoos can be found in most any major grove of trees. I had one huge target, one that I had missed while at Melbourne, the Powerful Owl. But the diversity, that I have found to be Australia, remains. This Pied Butcherbird was right at the base to Ayres Rock.

On a quick browse, here are some facts I learned: Melanin helps to resist bacteria that attack feathers; most parrots are left-footed and this is associated with problem-solving; some birds nest in two different places in the same year. (Also, I wish I could use the tiny birds for my own presentations. Is a free digital download possible?)

Anyway, we arrived, spotted a Great Horned Owl in flight and waited and waited and waited. So, Carlos decided to make me feel ungrateful by taking me to see another species of parrot, this one countable. In fact, the owls were so disgusted by Carlos’s presence that one of them vomited upon seeing him.
