How much do you know about owls? I’ve been fortunate to encounter many owls in my birding life, sometimes because I’m looking for them, sometimes happily by happenstance. What the Owl Knows: The New Science of the World’s Most Enigmatic Birds is a joyous, fascinating read. I don’t think so.

A Yellow-crowned Parrot digs in. The provision of housing and food is most gratifying, I have successfully spread this joy to one of my three neighbors, who now gleefully sends me pictures of the Cocoa Thrush family on his front porch, and Green Iguanas lounging in his avocado tree.

Which tours saw the most roosting owls? This odd nocturnal creature is around the same size as a Barred Owl. Local guide and birder David Mora Vargas has been spending much of his time at his family’s farm in the Sarapiqui lowlands. Did Cope have another site for nesting Great Potoo ? How about sites for Snowcap ?

Emus roam the open areas, and surprisingly, various parrots, lorikeets or cockatoos can be found in most any major grove of trees. I really only had one full day to bird, as I had some family obligations to fulfill, so I chose to see how much I could find at the Sydney Royal Botanical Garden.

We can say with much certainty that the majority of people admire and are fascinated with the resplendent colors of macaws, parrots, toucans and hummingbirds. Many birds around the world in the Robin family ( Turdidae ) are favorites due to their musical songs. The quail, guans, ducks and pheasant are hunted for their meat.

There are more than 50 regional endemics to choose from, and many birds are easier to see in Costa Rica than many other places because of access to habitat and/or lack of hunting pressure. Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. Yellow-naped Parrot.

On a quick browse, here are some facts I learned: Melanin helps to resist bacteria that attack feathers; most parrots are left-footed and this is associated with problem-solving; some birds nest in two different places in the same year. Do they have families too and do they take care of them? Is a free digital download possible?)
