You can probably understand the disappointment of a herpetologist friend of mine when he discovered that his very research transect was now paved. This is a cruise like no other, full of scientific lectures, over forty guides spread out on deck, bird-themed parties, and a lights-off mandate to protect birds at night. I learned of the trip right as it had been delayed and made a vow that I would be on that ship. The marine protected area status was designated in 2013.

The system was intended as a hunter-centric model, both guided by and benefitting consumptive interests. Given that few hunters actually consume coyotes, wolves, cougars, and except for a few individuals, even bears, it is obviously a “waste” of wildlife to shoot or trap these animals just for “fun” 2.

Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. It seems that this is another species for which the standard phrase of scientists anywhere, “more research needed”, applies. One road simply ends here, giving the place a real end-of-the-world feeling.

That’s right, the overwhelming benefits to the environment and the economy are generated by non-consumptive uses of the refuges like wildlife photography, environmental education, wildlife observation and interpretation, not hunting and fishing. Note in this 2010 video, birders, birdwatching and kayakers are mentioned, not hunters.
