What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death.

There were plenty of other ducks present and they included Eurasian Wigeon , Common Shelduck and Tufted Ducks. It was hunting season and the men appeared to be mostly targeting the Eurasian Wigeon. At the car-park there is a trail that many of the hunters use and also birders, but it is risky! Causeway as the tide drops on dusk.

Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. We also knew we had discovered Africa’s next hot birding destination.
