Not sure why they spend time in Shanghai in winter when they could come here though, but then again, I usually do not understand most of the behavior of humans either. They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ).

If you love your cats so much, why don’t you protect them? Cats are domestic animals highly susceptible to a host of diseases, many transmittable to humans.

The Blue Whistling Thrush is presumably named for its loud human-like whistling, and possibly for being blue. Assuming that the (North American) Imperial Woodpecker and the Ivory-billed Woodpecker are both extinct, the Great Slaty Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker species alive. A worrying trend.

In birding circles, Costa Rica is better known for protected areas, quetzal tours, and glittering displays of hummingbirds than the things that fly in urban spots. In the final bits and pieces of green space that dot a typical human dominated landscape? Blue Jays and Northern Cardinals , Downy Woodpeckers. That makes sense.

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. The window silhouettes were gone.
