They are endemic to New Zealand, but unlike many endemic species that have not suffered at the hands of humans, in fact they have expanded their range as forests have been opened up for pasture. They are the only endemic duck species that hunting is permitted for, in fact, the other species being either too rare or outright extinct.

Not sure why they spend time in Shanghai in winter when they could come here though, but then again, I usually do not understand most of the behavior of humans either. The Oriental Darter is classified as Near Threatened – the reasons are the usual ones: habitat loss, hunting, and pollution. of its hunts are successful.

The Blue Whistling Thrush is presumably named for its loud human-like whistling, and possibly for being blue. The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity. The Kalij Pheasant is not very good at denouncing typical avian gender stereotypes either. A worrying trend.

The white redtail couldn’t fly because she’d spent somewhere between 14 and 24 hours on the ground in freezing rain, encased in mud, and was suffering from capture myopathy, a sometimes-fatal condition induced by stress. If all her other toes eventually function perfectly, she could still hunt without that one non-essential talon.
