Last visit we enjoyed superb views of a trio of Masked Cardinals , interrupted by the arrival of a Green Kingfisher that was so intent on hunting, it hardly even cast an eye in our direction. From Yellow-hooded Blackbirds to Purple and Common Gallinules , there are almost too many birds to focus on!

In some areas wooden docks and boardwalks provided the only evidence of nearby human habitation; in others, multi-colored, bay-front homes enjoyed short walks to the water. Here and there, spits of pale sand became playgrounds for families and dogs, or hunting areas for Great Blue Herons. A view of East Bay.

Rarities and other goodies — a Ross’s Goose , a first-of-season White Pelican — also turn up, but the main attraction at Freezeout is sheer numbers, and these numbers, this spectacle, draw a fair number of non-birders to the scene as well as the dedicated bird nerds.

At some stage, a salmon-hunting bear at a shingle beach came too close, mere 9 steps. Those bears live in the wild and are not used to humans. Pelican, Pelecanus spp. Now, you should know Lucky, he’s no taller than my wife, who is of average height for a woman, and that bear was at least 4-5 times heavier than him.

Multitudes, hundreds of Brown Pelicans and Terns–Least, Common, Foster’s, Sandwich, Royal, and Caspian. They did flush eventually, but not because of humans. Surprisingly, the Avocet area was not fenced off. I imagined walking right up to them. I also imagined that they would not flush, which is a real fantasy.

If there are human fishing activities then all the better – Marabous will gather in numbers around fishermen’s docks and fish markets, in fact anywhere where fish are cleaned and scraps disposed of, allowing these intelligent birds to obtain a free meal. They are also attracted by fires and can gather in thousands.
