So, I anxiously followed the “Flock to Marion 2022” Facebook group in anticipation for open cabins to come up for sale. The seal hunters accidentally introduced mice to Marion, as was the case for many islands around the world. The trip had initially been planned for January 2021, but due to COVID-19, it was delayed to January 2022.

Gulls are generalists, as a group, and unfortunately that does not get a lot of respect from humans, even though we’re the greatest generalists of all. Still, those Ivory Gulls surviving off those putrid seals are tough cookies.

The animal protection group Seal Sitters says a necropsy showed that the sea lion had suffered a shark bite and had twisted intestines in addition to a bullet wound. The bodies of seven sea lions with bullet wounds were recently found on the Nisqually River. On Monday, a sea lion was found dead on West Seattle’s Lincoln Park beach.

The highlight of the weekend was seeing a pair foraging on a beach, searching the sand and tide strands for various morsels like a turnstone, and approaching the dozing New Zealand Fur Seal without the slightest sign of fear. Here and there the occasional Cape Gannet can be seen plunge-diving in the distance, while Kelp Gulls in loose groups fly past on their way out to the trawling grounds. Here one is close to the scenically impressive Cape of Good Hope National Park as well as the Boulder’s Coastal Park, home to hundreds of breeding African Penguins.

On the slow crawl into the farm, the first sighting was a small group of Green Ibis – a new species for me. Observing it negotiate swaying and swishing palm fronds was akin to seeing a seal swim through a kelp forest. Most notably of which was a pair of Blood-colored Woodpeckers.

Actually, I was bested by an entire group of teenagers, all gathered – along with 36 adults – on Hog Island , Audubon’s famous camp off the coast of Maine. Each year Hog Island offers programs, taught by a stellar staff of naturalists and artists, to groups of all kinds (teenagers, adults, families).

Our check in time was 7:45 and as we arrived the group before us was being prepped, and they weren’t even the first group. The boat moves quickly past interesting things; Northern Giant Petrels , Buller’s Shearwaters , White-capped Albatrosses , New Zealand Fur Seals (I understand they will pause to see dolphins).

The National Park is unusual because it offers very few facilities compared to most, but there is a sealed road right into the small car park and a shade shelter with a table and chairs and information about the park. As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens.
