The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. There is also text, distribution maps, a dark red bar “warning” about similar looking rare species, and conservation symbols. This near-mythical parrot has captivated my subconscious from the moment I learned of its existence. A massive (largest member of the Amazona group of parrots) creature with searing red eyes set in a sea of blue, brown, and purple, the Imperial Parrot ( Amazona imperialis ) is a recluse of higher elevation forest on the island of Dominica.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. The African Spoonbill is one of the six global spoonbill species, and the main African one (there are also some Eurasian Spoonbills in Africa).

It is my best bird because it is just such an incredible species, and looking at it made me realize that I had temporarily stopped to fully appreciate birds during the stressful last few years. Picking up a bargain copy of the latest edition of the Parrots of the World by Joseph Forshaw. Joseph has forgotten more than I will ever know when it comes to parrots. The kakariki are an odd group of parakeets, particularly in terms of their distribution. He lists four extant species, along with the two extinct species.
