As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. The whole place itself is an island, but the main islands are themselves the mainland to a number of smaller islands.

There were no clear signs indicating the beginning or the end of the park; it was a very small city park made up of araucaria trees that have not been destroyed and are now protected. However, there are those species which have a hard time bringing attention to themselves such as Yellow-shouldered Blackbird , Giant Nuthatch , and Vinaceous-breasted Parrot. It was quite late in the morning when we saw a family group consisting of an adult and three nearly fully grown juveniles right on the track about 300 meters away.

Check out the area around the cabins and parking area and you could see trogons, parrots, toucans, woodcreepers, tanagers, manakins, and much more. While watching groups of Red-eyed Vireos in the parking area, we had great looks at at least two different Cerulean Warblers along with a few of their more common Paruline relatives.

The next time you see a Bay-breasted Warbler in May, know that it might be singing its heart out because it was able to use habitat at Selva Bananito and other protected areas in Costa Rica. Lovely Lago de Yojoa fills a volcanic basin ringed by lush mountains, many of which contain vast tracts of protected lands and national forests. Our group started with a quick pontoon boat ride along the lake out of the Hondayute Marina to scan its marshy shore for rails, bitterns, and long-legged waders.

Calilegua is the only national park in the province of Jujuy that protects 76,000 ha of Yungas forest providing a bird sanctuary for many endemic species that live in this special forest. Plenty of parks and forests have been protected even as the city grew. Right next to the world famous Opera House is the the Sydney Botanical Gardens, a good place to see Sulphur-crested Cockatoos , Banded Rails and large roosting groups of Grey-headed Flying-foxes. The city is a very green one.

A combination of extinctions and proximity to Fiji means that a trip to that island group would net you pretty much all the same birds plus a whole raft of others. In particular there was a large are protected on the eastern side of the island (about a third of the island) as ‘Eua National Park.The island is less populated and quieter.

Why this one city alone would be named for birds, in this country of 1,800 species, is unclear, but it could very well be a designation inspired by the nearby Islas Ballestas, an uninhabited island group just offshore from Pisco and home to enormous breeding colonies of Humboldt Penguins , Inca Terns , Peruvian Boobies , and many other species.

A group of Spinifex Pigeons ran along beside our vehicle on the inside of the fence and Red-backed Fairywrens hopped up out of the long grass. The long grasses and reeds were perfect for them and they had plenty of protection along the length of the river. Brolga and Black-winged Stilt through the Poo Ponds fence. Black-necked Stork.
