Uganda is seeing a growth in tourism dollars from visits to see its mountain gorillas. The tourism revenue creates an incentive for Uganda to protect the endangered species at the same time that it contributes to human welfare. There are only about 700 mountain gorillas left in the world. This is very important.

I've read of the mountain gorillas in Virunga grieving over the loss of a silverback. It makes it even harder to subject chimps to experiments if you keep discovering these human similarities. A couple of studies imply that chimpanzees may mourn their dead. I believe they do. I believe that great apes do have that capacity.

It isn’t actually known if Haast’s Eagle ate people, but considering its prey was human sized giant birds it hardly seems unreasonable conjecture to state they probably at least made spirited attempts to do so. New Zealand was once home to Haast’s Eagle , the largest eagle in the world.

Europe's environment chief plans to ban laboratory tests on mankind's closest relatives -- chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos and orangutans -- in a clampdown on animal testing by the drugs industry and other laboratories. Their is a proposal to ban testing on apes in the EU. Is this a solution to a problem that doesn't exist?

The zoo blamed human error for the deaths, saying it didn’t have the expertise to manage the fish and that a lack of dissolved oxygen led to the deaths. Zoo patrons were shocked to see Barika, a western lowland gorilla, holding a knife and apparently pointing it at another primate in the enclosure.

We were staying at the Jacana Lodge, a posh lodge perched on a small lake, as it was a convenient layover between the more touristy northern part of the park and the forest park of Bwindi (home to the gorillas). Bats, it seems, are the reservoir of many zoonoses that cause humans, and other creatures, so many issues.

Here are some observations: When reading a book about gorillas to/with a seven-year old, I was struck by the mixed messages the book sent. Here 's the book, and in the preview you can see that in the beginning when the gorilla being described is male he is referred to as "he." So far so good.
