Given that it is hard to mention one of my favorite bands, the Mountain Goats, in a birding blog, these photos of blue sheep are probably the best opportunity I will ever get. Blue Sheep. At least they are cute. Listen/watch their “This year” here. Tibetan Fox. Kind of cute, too. No nice blue flowers. Moupin Pika.

Birding the Bear Mountain of Serbia

Chamois is an agile goat-antelope with short hooked horns, found in mountainous areas of Europe from Spain to the Caucasus. Distribution of the Ural Owl in the Tara NP in the breeding season (Rajkovic and Pantovic). Turn-off to a macadam road winding through the forest and… there’s a Chamois on the road!

Away From it All: The North Cascades

10,000 Birds

I didn’t spot a Spotted Owl , or catch a glimpse of a Marbled Murrelet – both North Cascades National Park breeders. I didn’t see the mountain goats that lend the town of Mazama its logo, though I did buy a water bottle as a souvenir. Now, none of these are great rarities.

Revenge Birding (Shanghai, early June 2022)

This behavior is described in a paper covering pellet casting by many species in Singapore, including many non-owls. “I’m doing this for revenge” sing the Mountain Goats in their most recent song, “ Training Montage “ It is very good, though I feel it could be even better without the last 50 seconds or so.

Jamaica Birding Trip 2013 Part II

Heading out of Ecclesdown Road on the second day of my trip, I had nailed all of my targets save four species ( Caribbean Dove , Yellow-billed Parrot , Jamaican Owl , and Stolid Flycatcher ). I told her that I had three target birds left to see, and she gestured at a tree near the guesthouse where three Jamaican Owls were roosting.

Acclimatisation Societies of New Zealand

It should surprise no one that someone brought horses, or goats, or chickens. Useful species were ones you could eat, or hunt, or preferably both, which is why New Zealand had several species of deer, the alpine goat-antelopes known as the Chamois and the Himalayan Tahr introduced. But hedgehogs? Greenfinches?

The notion of sly birding reminds me of being a lone birding kid and noting my lifer Prairie Warbler during a grade school walk-a-thon at Goat Island. To this day, I can’t help but wonder what else was using the woods of Goat Island on that wet September, 1984 morning? At least, that’s how I see it.
