By this I mean applying the term antelope to cover all of the family Bovidae, which would include the sheep, goats and ox. I’m a big fan of the antelopes, a group that is most commonly associated with Africa but which also occurs in Asia and, if you stretch the term to be cladistically meaningful, Europe and North America.

A couple of the biggest of bird families are restricted to the Americas. Just about anywhere a birder ventures, the miniscule members of the latter family can be seen, and in most tropical locales, it’s not just one species. A true black sheep, it’s often found in the same areas as the White-bellied Mountain-gem.

One raft of 20+ Mallards swims by the bank, right in front of jackals, careless like if they were just two sheep! After the Common Starling , my second bird of the morning becomes the largest eagle of Europe, the White-tailed Eagle , this one with a fairly white tail, yet still dark beak, that I estimate to be in its 3rd calendar year.

Rabbits are now thriving again after recovering their numbers and the Kent Wildlife Trust has implemented a grazing policy at Queendown Warren, with sheep and cattle, to supplement the rabbits’ efforts. Lepidopterists were concerned that they might not endure see the 21st century.
