It’s easy to choke it with food while you’re feeding it and chances are good that you’d raise the chick like a pet and you’d end up with an adult bird that doesn’t know what its predators are and seek humans for food and mating…aka an unreleasable bird. Owls are a little different. Leave it be.

The primary reasons for the decline of macaws and parrots are many but habitat loss due to logging; clear cutting for crops and cattle ranching; and capture for the pet trade rank among the most threatening. These threats are further exacerbated by the naturally low reproductive rates of these cavity-nesting birds. Wicked, right?

The Plain Sunbird is the plain vanilla version of the otherwise often very colorful family (ok, a very low-budget sort of joke). Both are part of what one paper calls the Brown Hawk Owl complex – something that is much less objectionable than the military-industrial complex but (at least to me) not really a lot more interesting.

According to an article in the Guardian , “nearly a quarter of black swan families are parented by homosexual couples, the males sometimes mating with a female simply to have a chick. My possible birdwatching highlight this month was Short-eared Owl at Fengxian. It seems they kept a pheasant as a pet for the chick.
