As birders, we tend to spend more time in wetlands than most of our peers, neighbors, and family members. Despite our focused efforts at the La Fortuna Waterfall Trail, the first target bird remained elusive but once we reached our primary destination, we sort of made up for the miss by laying eyes on some other choice species.

Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. You don’t actually have to go too far from Broome inland to find taller trees and different bird species. We went for a wander to see what species were further upstream and accidentally flushed a Barking Owl. There are several bird species here that you won’t see in the Broome area, so it is definitely worth a look.

In the time we spent on Culebra I saw 49 species of birds, not bad for an island outside of the wintering grounds for most neotropical migrants and only measuring eleven miles square. ” White-tailed Deer have been introduced but no one in our group picked up any ticks. I spotted eight species in my time on Culebra.

Due to the fact that we have recorded up to eighty species on any visit in recent weeks I will break them down into the larger species and then the smaller species next week. There was a family of Black-necked Storks that was initially a family group, but over recent weeks they have started to feed separately.

The lake was filled with families of Dusky Moorhens and Purple Swamphens (or Pukeko as we call them in New Zealand), all tending small groups of black chicks. Magpie-larks are neither magpies nor larks but are the largest of the monarch-flycatchers, and the most terrestrial of the family.

The trip was to visit a handful of sites across North Sydney, which was great for me as they were places I could stand to know better and were close to where my family live (and I was staying). Another nice find by the assembled birders was a Bar-shouldered Dove , a species I had only seen in Queensland before this point.

As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens. Little Black Cormorants and Australian Pelican. Australian Pelicans soaring in the thermals. Orange Chat. Apparently they breed to the south and return to feed at Lake Bindegolly. Turtle shell.

This association belies the advanced and highly sophisticated adaptations the family has evolved for a life of wandering, hunting and, yes, piracy on the high seas. The etymological disconnect between the common name (Great) and the specific name ( minor ) is due to the species originally being described as Pelecanus minor , little pelican.

When visiting Sydney I have in the past tended to visit birding sites near the coast and centre, by virtue of that being where my family is. I pulled over, as this was only the third time I have seen this species, and found a few Australian White Ibis among them, along with Purple Swamphens. Could it get any better? After that?
