We want to help the birding tourism industry come back strong from the COVID pandemic. Today the reserve contains mature forests, secondary forests, rivers, lagoons, small waterfalls, agroforestry productive areas, and functional gardens; which are the habitat of more than 350 species of birds.

It was an unexpected bird tour, without too much planning and aimed at a few target species, of which we saw most, but the main one eluded us… Early morning, leaving the last houses behind… and a Little Owl awaits us on a traffic sign. My company has an office in Monterrey so my trip wasn’t the first time to this industrial city, nor will it be the last. There was a large raft of hundreds of American Coot , an American White Pelican and lots of duck species. We then checked the Presa El Nogalito for one bird species in particular. The birds warmed us too.

Set in an abandoned oil refinery where wildlife is slowly regaining control save for the desperate attempts of golfers to retain all eighteen holes, industrial ghosts loom over rolling freshwater lakes bordered by fifty foot tall trees. Peregrine Falcon. For the most part, vultures occupied the sky. Gradually, the bird drifted nearer.

I can’t tell you exactly how I brokered this meeting between these titans of industry and a team from the AOS, either. “We’ll take the Peregrine Falcon ,” at least seven voices said at once. That species could use a cash infusion right away.” I think they’re starting with Monsanto Falcon.

While we could chase a number of local, rare residents, looking for super tough species like Pheasant Cuckoo and Tawny-faced Quail is more akin to searching and lurking in appropriate habitat and just hoping to get lucky. Happy birders looking at an Aplomado Falcon. In Costa Rica, we don’t get many chances to chase birds.
