Horrible Hybrids

Looks like a scaup of some sort, but it’s not quite right My bird certainly had the peaked crown characteristic of a Lesser Scaup; the feathers on its head looked black at a distance, while closer inspection revealed a purple sheen. Many years ago a friend of mine kept a small but varied collection of ducks and geese.

This will change over time of course and once it rains again you would need to consider if you had the right vehicle to access the area. Dragonflies photobombing on the right as we approach. You have to look carefully, because often there are Australasian Grebes and Green Pygmy-Geese amongst the ducks and lilies.

Swamp Harrier soaring just to the right of the “depth” sign. Alongside the Black Kites and Whistling Kites we observed a Brown Falcon and a soaring Black Breasted Buzzard. Brown Falcon. There are still Magpie Geese about, but the long vegetation can make it hard to see them sometimes. Black-breasted Buzzard.

We landed in Melbourne, where we had rented an Air BNB for three nights, right in the heart of down town. Another bird that was never really on my wish list, this is one of two Cape Barren Geese that were on The Farm. This Brown Falcon was very patient, giving me several minutes to photograph it.

Marlgu Billabong at the end of the dry season

Marlgu Billabong looking right from the shelter. There were numerous Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks on the bank with Yellow Chats running among them to drink. Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks. Once the rains come the land will flood and there will no longer be a billabong, but a floodplain.
