It is being hunted solely for food, and those who kill them certainly want their meat exported by any criminal channel available. Money and effort are being invested in that protection.

And the absurdity is in the reality that the author and the featured person who kills sentient nonhumans for a living, think they're onto something. And though being hauled to their death on a bulldozer is terrible, any other form of slaughter at the hands of another, on that other's timeline and terms, is nevertheless slaughter.

The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. The eventual kill is quick, clean, and painless. It's a thoughtful question I wish more people would ask.
