I’d been volunteering at rescues through my young adulthood, and I was training as a cat socializer, teaching terrified felines — the unlucky victims of cruel people — to trust humans again. All of these afflictions are human-caused and largely preventable. It brought the information out of the abstract and into the real, the visceral.

In fact, they are so intent on reducing information available to consumers that they are lobbying to prevent dairies from labeling their milk as “rBST-free”! Europe and Canada outlawed using hormones on dairy cows because of such human and animal health concerns. I have no idea if rBST is safe. There’s good reason for cynicism.
