I was delighted by the invitation and spent hours going through my photos, printing them out, imagining fifteen 4-year olds entranced by egrets, herons, and Burrowing Owls. Jake’s favorite before-bedtime book when he was just a bit younger was Owl Babies by Martin Waddell, a picture book I had picked up at a nature center.

I was shocked when I saw a hen Mallard actually incubating eggs in one of these things–they do work…and how do the mallards get in there? This rookery also housed nesting Barn Owls (not the bird box on the lower half of the pole on the far right). I used to be very skeptical of these.

We saw a smaller member of the potoo family, Northern Potoo , Nyctibius jamaicensis , at Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, boating and birding the Salado River. Double-striped Thick-Knee nests are shallow depressions in the ground, with a typical clutch of two eggs. And, I didn’t even touch on the owls!

I found this little grouping of Guillemots, with parents, babies and even an egg. The show stopper was his Eagle-owl. Tomorrow morning we will head on down to England, and the township of Hull, to visit the Spurn Wildlife Reserve. Here is just a small portion of one wall, covered by Guillemots.

This happened to me recently on a birding trip, with somewhat egg-on-the-face results. Fish & Wildlife Service expects sea levels to rise due to global warming, swamping beaches on which Snowy Plovers currently nest, it is good news that the number of beaches proposed for protection as Snowy Plover nesting habitat has doubled.

More precisely I wanted to learn how to draw wildlife. It depicted a Common Loon ( Gavia immer ) sitting on eggs on a seemingly crude nest. There were waterbirds and raptors, owls and woodpeckers, thrushes, grosbeaks and crossbills, and of course those charming and indispensable new world warblers. He died on July 27, 2008.
