Horrible Hybrids

As a general rule, birders don’t like hybrids. For a start, they may struggle to identify them, while secondly they can’t even tick them. On BirdTrack, the British equivalent of e-Bird, the list of birds provided does allow for Tufted Duck x Ferruginous Duck to be recorded, but not Tufted Duck x Pochard. However, that’s exactly what I guessed the duck swimming in front of me had to be.

When I grew up in the seventies we didn’t have global warming, we had global cooling ( [link] ). Consequently, the summer weather was awful, always. Continuous drizzle, gales and the lead-grey sky merging seamlessly with the tarmac of the roads. Surrounded by damp greyness, we would try to enjoy our Dutch summer holidays. My Dad had nothing to throw at this misery but unfounded optimism: “ I can see it clearing up any time now ”.

Birding Sepilok, Borneo (Part 3)

The Bornean Bristlehead is kind of the star bird of Sepilok. eBird calls it “a ‘grail bird’ of many birders visiting Borneo. Ironically, while I was very keen on seeing it during my week at Sepilok, I thought I failed to do so only to realize later – going through my photos – that I had indeed seen it. If that sounds implausible to you, I fully agree.
