Top Sites for Roadside Birding in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

All too often, roads are avenues for destruction, at least for nature. Habitat is destroyed to make them and then the fresh cuts become long-lasting scars that make it all too easy for people to eat away or completely remove what remains. Even so, despite the big risk for biodiversity, we need roads. At least we do if we want to use vehicles to more easily move from one place to the next.

Galápagos: A Natural History, Second Edition–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

I did not prepare properly when I went to the Galápagos. Reading over my email from that period, I can’t believe I ended up there at all–I was working on a chaotic project at work, the economy was in crisis (well, the economy is always in crisis, but this was the summer of 2011, as in Black Monday crisis), and the tour itself was not confirmed till two months before the start date.

In China, wherever there is one real tourist attraction (like the Great Wall), the local strategy seems to be to add some fake attractions – replicas of palaces or tombs, amusement parks, shopping centers – in order to maximize the income from tourists.

The Collins Bird Guide covers Europe, North Atlantic islands, much of North Africa and the Middle East.
