The Collins Bird Guide, 3rd edition

Never trust a field guide publisher’s claim of a definitive text, because each new edition is certain to bring more a definitive text than that from the previous edition! The Collins Bird Guide covers Europe, North Atlantic islands, much of North Africa and the Middle East. The 1st edition from 1999 was a complete revolution in just about everything, but predominantly the quality and realism of illustrations, showing what a field guide could be and seriously raising the threshold for other publi

Top Sites for Roadside Birding in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

All too often, roads are avenues for destruction, at least for nature. Habitat is destroyed to make them and then the fresh cuts become long-lasting scars that make it all too easy for people to eat away or completely remove what remains. Even so, despite the big risk for biodiversity, we need roads. At least we do if we want to use vehicles to more easily move from one place to the next.

The Change in Seasons

10,000 Birds

Bearing witness to the cyclical fluctuations of the seasons is a boon to the psyche on a level that tends to go unnoticed and unannounced. We typically celebrate sightings and not a change in air temperature or moisture content. Here in the tropics, our seasons do not exhibit such extreme variations as higher latitudes (in either direction) do. There are no sudden swings in temperature of 20 or 30 degrees – but there are subtleties to be appreciated by the keen observer.

Pied Herons near Broome

With our continued travel restrictions due to the floodwater damage done to our highways and the destruction of the Fitzroy Crossing bridge we are still enjoying our local bird-life. However, birds that would not normally be local have arrived from the north following all of the wet weather. In 2017 we found a lone Pied Heron that had wandered south and then in 2018 more Pied Herons arrived after a decent amount of rain and included a rufous morph bird amongst the flock.
