What’s up with the Hook-billed Kites?

10,000 Birds

Cedar Waxwings have come back to central Mexico. Most years, there are no more than a few dozen reports of this species across the region. But in 2020 I personally saw thousands of Waxwings in a dozen or so sites, and every one of my birder friends across the country had a similar experience. This year, the sightings are less, so far. (I have seen exactly one Waxwing this year.

Pied Herons near Broome

10,000 Birds

With our continued travel restrictions due to the floodwater damage done to our highways and the destruction of the Fitzroy Crossing bridge we are still enjoying our local bird-life. However, birds that would not normally be local have arrived from the north following all of the wet weather. In 2017 we found a lone Pied Heron that had wandered south and then in 2018 more Pied Herons arrived after a decent amount of rain and included a rufous morph bird amongst the flock.

This is the second part of a post showing some birds seen at Nonggang in December 2022, along with the usual (mostly irrelevant) comments. 10,000 Birds

We continue to have restrictions on where we can drive around Broome, but there are no restrictions for the local bird-life and they continue to move around the landscape. It doesn’t really matter that we can’t leave the bitumen , because the birds are alongside the highway across Roebuck Plains to the south of Broome. Top Sites for Roadside Birding in Costa Rica

10,000 Birds

All too often, roads are avenues for destruction, at least for nature. Habitat is destroyed to make them and then the fresh cuts become long-lasting scars that make it all too easy for people to eat away or completely remove what remains. Even so, despite the big risk for biodiversity, we need roads. At least we do if we want to use vehicles to more easily move from one place to the next.

There are still many roads closed after our recent floods. Although some roads have been reopened they can be closed at very short notice when we get more torrential rain. We enjoy cycling and walking and we can easily cycle on the flat bike path to Cable Beach , which is about 3.5kms from home.
