Casey, Weisman elected to AVMA Board of Directors

Drs. Erin Casey and Jim Weisman ran unopposed for seats on the AVMA Board of Directors and were declared elected in February. They will begin their six-year terms this July during AVMA Convention 2023.

Dr. Casey, an industry veterinarian from Virginia, has been elected as District II director, representing AVMA members in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Dr. Casey has represented Virginia as its delegate to the AVMA House of Delegates since 2017. She currently resides in Fredericksburg, Virginia, serving as the local professional services veterinarian for Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health.

Prior to working in industry, Dr. Casey served as a science and technology policy fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, placed with the U.S. State Department’s Biosecurity Engagement Program during the 2013-15 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. She also was a member of the inaugural class of the AVMA’s Future Leaders Program in 2010, served on the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference Planning Committee as a member and committee chair, and was a member of the AVMA Early Career Development Committee for three years.

A 2010 veterinary graduate of the University of Georgia, she completed two years in small animal general practice in northern Virginia following a one-year small animal medicine and surgery rotating internship at Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, D.C.

“Through interactions with veterinary students and veterinary technician students, as well as current veterinary colleagues, I have a firm understanding of the issues facing our profession,” Dr. Casey said. “We need to work together as an entire veterinary team, including all support staff and veterinarians, to improve practice culture and workplace staffing shortages.”

Dr. Weisman, a small animal veterinarian and a faculty member and administrator at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, has been elected as District VI director, representing Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

A 1997 veterinary graduate of Purdue, Dr. Weisman is from Evansville, Indiana, where he was born, raised, and went into practice for 11 years after receiving his veterinary degree. He then returned to Purdue to accept a faculty position at the veterinary college. Dr. Weisman currently serves as the assistant dean for clinical education and as a clinical associate professor. He continues to practice medicine in the small animal emergency and critical care department of the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital.

In addition, Dr. Weisman is very active in his community, serving as president of his home county’s 4-H council, 4-H center’s board, and county fair association. He also served on the Indiana State Fair Board.

Dr. Weisman served as the national Student AVMA treasurer while in veterinary college. He has served in various capacities with the Indiana VMA, including as president and as the Indiana alternate delegate in the AVMA HOD. He is currently the state’s delegate to the HOD. He also was a member of the AVMA’s Early Career Development Committee and AVMA Strategy Management Committee.

“I appreciate that we are a broad and far-reaching profession comprised of many varied career paths; however, each of these paths are tethered by our common veterinary medical degree and ethical obligation to advance animal and human health,” Dr. Weisman said. “The AVMA membership asks its volunteer leaders to be representative of the many faces of our profession. I am ready to be the leader who considers these varied views and who can and will then make decisions which are best suited for our profession.”
