Updated March 8, 2023

The Food and Drug Administration announced in January that the agency had approved new generic drugs for cats, dogs, and horses and granted a supplemental approval for a generic drug for use in ferrets.

The FDA approved generic marbofloxacin tablets from two companies, Felix Pharmaceuticals and ZyVet Animal Health. The agency approved the tablets for use in dogs and cats to treat infections associated with bacteria susceptible to marbofloxacin.

The Food and Drug Administration granted a supplemental approval for Midamox for Cats from Norbrook Laboratories for use in ferrets to prevent heartworm disease.

The FDA approved two other generic drugs from Felix Pharmaceuticals:

Carprofen tablets for use in dogs to relieve pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and to control postoperative pain associated with soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries.

Praziquantel tablets for use in dogs to remove the canine cestodes Dipylidium caninum, Taenia pisiformis, and Echinococcus granulosus and to remove and control Echinococcus multilocularis.

The agency also approved generic dexmedetomidine hydrochloride from ZyVet Animal Health for use in dogs and cats as a sedative and analgesic to facilitate clinical examinations, clinical procedures, minor surgical procedures, and minor dental procedures. Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride is also indicated for use as a preanesthetic to general anesthesia in dogs and cats.

The FDA approved DetomiSed from Akorn Operating Co., a generic detomidine hydrochloride for use in horses as a sedative and analgesic to facilitate minor surgical and diagnostic procedures in mature horses and yearlings.

The agency granted supplemental approval for Midamox for Cats from Norbrook Laboratories, a generic imidacloprid and moxidectin topical solution. The supplemental approval is for use of the product in ferrets to prevent heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis. The product kills adult fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and is indicated for the treatment of flea infestations on ferrets.

The FDA lists recent approvals of animal drugs on a page on the agency’s website.
