Though the views were distant and the duck was small, the sight of the cute little dabbler (seen in photo with Wood Duck ) made the five-hour ride back to New York City much more tolerable!

My visit on Saturday morning was meant to be a quick stop to scan the ducks, geese, and gulls to see if anything interesting was around. The Ruddy Ducks looked miserable but the grebe and the coots seemed to be doing fine. Such a cold Ruddy Duck. Ring-necked Ducks have great eyes. I kind of felt bad for him.

New Croton Dam, located just outside of New York City, is an enormous feat of construction. At New Croton, the water spills directly over the side of the giant stone structure, and yet the cormorants swam less than a few feet from the precipice!

Behind the Outback Steakhouse at Edgewater Commons, a shopping center across the Hudson River from New York City, is a rusted pile of wreckage that is gradually falling apart and into the river. Despite its unaesthetic look to people it seems that ducks and gulls have no such problem with it.

I think of it as the “new” pond but it has been there since about a year after the barn burned down, and that’s getting on a decade now. The Orchard Orioles, though… I don’t know.

Next I had to find some co-conspirators to ride with all the way up to Point Peninsula, a twelve-hour round-trip from New York City. Being caught by a New York State Trooper going 82 miles-per-hour in a 65-zone is not terribly fun, but I can at least blame that on the lack of cruise control in my car.

We made our way from our boat’s berth out to and around the tip of Breezy Point, seeing the typical and expected ducks like Long-tailed Duck and Red-breasted Merganser. Also, if lots of ducks and geese gather in a spot where they don’t normally the amount of bird poop could certainly be a problem. The little tiny duck with the white supercilium was ours! Anthony had spotted the bird back in the reeds and announced it only to see a Wood Duck swim out. He couldn’t figure out how he had botched the identification so badly when the Garganey followed the Wood Duck out of the reeds. But I included a Wood Duck for scale!

Long-tailed Duck is one of my favorite birds that we see on the Christmas Bird Count. The New York City area’s Christmas Bird Count density is absurd. Participating in a Christmas Bird Count is tiring but essentially simple. Eventually, when the circle was adopted, it was discovered that some circles overlapped.

Baisley Pond Park is the place to find Ring-necked Ducks and Redheads in New York City, it usually hosts the largest flock of wintering American Coots , and the Canada Goose and Ring-billed Gull flocks sometimes hide a rarity among them. Lacking rare geese I turned to the ducks. They only stole from the coots.

Of course, this only works when the target birds vocalize, which Scaup don’t tend to do in winter in New York City. The caption notes that it is a male display sound, given frequently February to May, “with a backward toss of the head,” longer than similar sounds by other Aythya ducks.
