I am driving down the dirt track in the Carska Bara Ramsar site (Serbia) and a cloud of dust closely follows me, like a rider on a pale horse. A dozen Ferruginous Ducks and several Garganeys in the shallows of the floodzone. Just for fun, it seems – joie de vivre?

Four months ago, I would have taken to the crowded pathway at Lafayette Heritage Trail Park like a horse to pasture, reveling in the outdoor exercise and rare time away from my new baby. Here, scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks landed in the waving reeds, only their heads and bright pink bills visible as we slowly moseyed past.

Currently, A Chance for Bliss sanctuary is home to 96 residents including 25 horses, 22 dogs, 8 goats, 7 pot belly pigs , 4 sheep, 2 steers, 5 ducks, 5 geese, 5 cockatiels, 4 rabbits, 3 chickens, 3 cats, 1 turkey, a one-winged pigeon, Hines, and a turtle, Bart. The oldest dog, Max, is 17, while the oldest horse, Prince is 36.

Ducks and other waterbirds : I could still see Northern Shoveler, Cinnamon Teal, Northern Pintail , and various gulls, terns, and shorebirds. Raptors : A pretty high number of raptor species occur in Costa Rica but hold your feathered horses raptorphiles because most are rare! A monster Jabiru from last year.

My colleague Doug wrote me an email describing the whereabouts of these “rosy finches” and my wife had to manage my excitement with horse tranquilizer… What a fantastic little birds. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. I flew into Denver from Mexico.
