Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

I was at Baranda fish farm, north of Belgrade, following a short embankment without much hope: swans and ducks at the right hand side and a solar powered screamer at the left, meant to scare cormorants with sounds of shooting, reloading, shooting and bird cries (presumably in agony). Their claim to fame?

Neither do they seem as painfully out-of-place in the wild as an escaped “exotic” cage-bird or farm animal like the Budgerigar or Red Junglefowl – and they’re generally more likely to fare well on their own. The same can’t really be said of a confusing Orange Bishop or gaudy Mandarin Duck loose in a city park.

Also, if lots of ducks and geese gather in a spot where they don’t normally the amount of bird poop could certainly be a problem.

There were, however, compensations, such as finding breeding Yellow Wagtails on a nearby farm where I’d never seen them before. There were plenty of birds on the water to keep me entertained, with close to 60 Greylag geese, 50 Canada Geese, 80 Wigeon, 250 Coots, plus a good assortment of Tufted Ducks, Gadwall, Shoveler and Mallard.
