Pied Avocet by Boris Okanovic Next we find ourselves at the famous fish farm in the village of Sakule. Ecka Fish Farm by Mileta Cekovic Soon we reached the Ecka Fish Farm, a part of the wider Carska Bara Important Bird Area (yet, not a part of the protected Carska Bara Reserve). Protest indeed!

The namesake “lake” generally only exists when there is enough runoff during the spring, as the area was extensively modified for farming years ago. Although the refuge was established in 1964 in part to protect crane habitat, a pair did not return until 1972, and the first nests were observed in 1976.

In birding circles, Costa Rica is better known for protected areas, quetzal tours, and glittering displays of hummingbirds than the things that fly in urban spots. Seasonally, a good number of ducks were there too along with loons and other choice waterbirds. That makes sense. I mean, who comes to Costa Rica to bird on city streets?

There are many species of waders and ducks, vultures, raptors and storks. The access road passes the Lake Manyara NP and through communal farming lands within Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Serengeti NP protects a huge swathe of almost 15,000 km2 / 6000 mi2 in north-west Tanzania. Serengeti National Park.

People, they argue, are more important than bugs, and besides, the money will help pay to protect other conservation land. All our places, from cities to farms, are part of nature. A duck farmed in a factory is part of nature as much as one that grew up on a pond, even if the particulars of its ecosystem are different.

Even among the protected areas of Serbia, the Iron Gates National Park (in Serbian: Djerdap) stands out as better preserved. Keep in mind that the special nature reserves (dark green on the park map) enjoy the highest level of protection and are off limits to visitors (possible only with research permits issued by the park authorities).
