In addition, a separate 11-page Teacher’s Guide can be downloaded from the publishers website. In 1967 only 24 parrots were living in El Yunque. Success is not easily achieved. All the birds face right (with some exceptions, like the elegantly posed, back-to-back adult breeding Common and Thick-billed Murres) and the flying images can always be followed in a pattern, even when they interspersed with the smaller vignettes. Add photos, bullet points, and a few diagrams and this would be a handy book in and of itself.

That’s a photo of Ridgway’s office on the right, fifth floor of the South Tower. Or, you can do what I did and download a Kindle version for a little more than half that price. Ridgway spent the rest of his career in the Castle, the Smithsonian building that then housed the National Museum’s bird collection.
