Our small group spent a weekend at the Ferret Research Camp, a cluster of trailers tucked in the middle of a black-tailed prairie dog town and the site, as the name implies, of a black-footed ferret reintroduction program. In the winters the snow lies heavy and researchers travel in and out by small plane.

Fossils of a giant extinct penguin, Inkayacu paracasensis were found a while back in Peru. The fossils were very well preserved and included feathers.

The introductory section also covers odonate colors, names, threats and conservation, research, how to photograph dragonflies, how to collect them, and, most importantly for us beginners, how to observe dragonflies and damselflies for identification.
