On a New Level of Absurdity in the Slaughter Business

Animal Person

"While plenty of people pay attention to the question of what it means to raise an animal humanely, far fewer stop to consider the notion—and the ostensible paradox—of humane slaughter." And perhaps that "better" will distract the reader from the undeniable fact of the unjust slaughter. All you need to know is one word: slaughter.

On The Respectful Emperor

Animal Person

Farmers were bragging about how much they "loved" the animals they would soon betray and slaughter, and many omnivores who had discovered how animals are treated wanted to assuage their consciences a bit by "at least" giving the animals a better life prior to their untimely slaughter. We don't say we hate pigs and want to see them writhing in pain and slaughtered. We don't say we hate cows.

Everything in Moderation?

Animal Person

Working for The Princeton Review for nearly a decade has made me forever (? really, Mary?) peeved upon hearing or reading these words. It smacks of laziness, not to mention exaggeration. . Rape in moderation. Genocide in moderation.

On Jeff Corwin's 100 HEARTBEATS

Animal Person

The part that I definitely believe is laudable, and I can get behind, is in the final chapter: "Exploited to Extinction.". Corwin tells the story of the Maasai of Kenya, whose culture involved disdain for and slaughter of lions. But he constantly wonders where and when and how much we should intervene, which I suppose is laudable.
