The first snipe I ever saw was on Tobago, a definite Wilson’s Snipe. Such was the unlikeliness of a definitive ID. The generally accepted rules were: any snipe found between 1st May and 31st July on Trinidad is definitely a South American Snipe , any snipe found outside of that time period could be either species.

Wise, mature trees, mossy buttress roots plunging into dark, moist soil, and massive broad leaves nodding to and fro in refreshing air begets a meditative and reverential experience. Some movement overhead was definitely a parrot – this was the first of several Red-necked Parrots that we would encounter throughout the day.

Bird song is defined in various ways, but I prefer the functional definition used by evolutionary biologists. One of the (undesirable, in my view) definitions of bird song is that it must be complex. Bird “instrumental music&# is bird song. A bird song is a communication having to do with sexual selection.

I know from experience how accessible Dennis is, last year he helped me identify a damselfly I photographed in Costa Rica (Argia anceps, no common name). The Natural History section points out that Red-tailed Pennants hold their wings flat or slightly lowered, while the skimmers tend to raise their wings.

I have written about the interesting sex life of these jacanas a few times already (short version: female mates with male, lays a bunch of eggs for him to incubate and raise the chicks, leaves him, finds another male, repeat). Once I am moderately successful, I often find such photos quite pleasing.
