Short-tailed Hawk, Black Hawk-Eagle, Brown-capped Tyrannulet , and other species. Black Hawk-Eagle from another day. The owners have been protecting the forest and using it as a natural teaching lab for several years and the matriarch makes delicious home-cooked meals.

The flash of white in the tail and the sheer size of the bird made me think Bald Eagle and when I put my binoculars up I was correct. This is awesome,” he said as the eagle dropped to the water and grabbed a fish, “I’ve never seen anything like this.” I explained and offered my binoculars for him to take a look.

Would Barred Owls chuckle and admit that, for the record, “No, we really aren’t saying ‘Who cooks for you’?” Which would travel to tourism conventions, give fun presentations and hand out cultural knick-knacks? At the largest of conferences, logistical and cultural issues could be a real problem.

These consist of Red-crowned Crane , Blakiston’s Fish-Owl , and Steller’s Sea-Eagle – all among the most massive and spectacular representatives of their families. The proprietress speaks almost no English, but makes up for the lack of communication with effusive helpfulness and fantastic skill as a cook.

As a bonus, after leaving the cafe, we also had an Ornate Hawk-Eagle next to the road. It’s the only place there, is small, rustic, has home-cooked fare, and close, eye friendly birds. Yeah, it was rainy but the birding was quality. If you happen to find yourself in Costa Rica, visit the Cafe Colibri.
