It looks like they have some great workshops with people like Gene Bauer from Farm Sanctuary and Nicole Pollata from the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF.).

" I haven't been to either conference, so I can say nothing from personal experience. by Drew Wilson at Care2's animal welfare blog has yet to have any comments about rights and welfare. I don't know how big the readership of that blog is, but it is international if that matters.

Delegates to the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) conference in Qatar voted down three of four proposals to protect sharks. This really sucks. According to the New York Times. China, by far the world’s largest consumer of the cartilaginous fish, for sharkfin soup, and Japan, which has battled to keep the convention from being extended to any marine species, led the opposition.

At a conference in Brussels, Belgium on 6 November, European Commission Vice-President Günter Verheugen, and Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik restated the EU's commitment to the reduction of animal testing. Industry representatives were also present at the conference, which was held as part of the European Partnership on Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA). I just don't understand it. Is there a different culture regarding animals in Europe?

Finless Shark Found in the Phillipines

Ironically, this was just after a conference on saving sharks held in the Phillipines. The shark's fins had been cut and he was still alive when found, but sadly died. From Inquirer.net. Last week, representatives of some 50 countries attended the third meeting of the International Cooperation on Migratory Sharks (SHARKS III) hosted by the Philippines in Manila. Eleven of them signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) pledging to protect the whale sharks.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond is claimed to have told a police conference on wildlife crime last month that offences against animals were not even “on the second page” after serious crimes such as robbery and assault. Lots of jerks in the news lately. One of Scotland’s top sheriffs is under pressure to quit his leading role in combating wildlife crime after allegedly telling a former police officer concerned about the soft sentences given to those convicted to “get a life”.

They're not necessarily questioning the ethics, but the efficacy. This is an excellent article that appeared in the Boston Globe last week. The feud between animal rights activists and researchers is among the bitterest in science.

This Friday, at noon, thanks to David Lynch's foundation (he's a long-time meditator), you can watch a conference with Lynch, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Russell Simmons (also long-time meditators, with Simmons being the newest) who are "coming together to teach one million at-risk youth to meditate." You have to register to watch the conference. I've been using Transcendental Meditation (TM) as my meditation technique for over a decade.
