Handing out T-shirts at the registration desk with a summer intern from the Field Museum (one of the conference’s sponsoring groups) gave me a good feel for who was around and what ornithologists are like. Like most conferences, this one had an exhibit hall and poster session, too. There was lots for attendees to do besides sit in hotel conference rooms, though. According to the New York Times. China, by far the world’s largest consumer of the cartilaginous fish, for sharkfin soup, and Japan, which has battled to keep the convention from being extended to any marine species, led the opposition.

Finless Shark Found in the Phillipines

Ironically, this was just after a conference on saving sharks held in the Phillipines. The shark's fins had been cut and he was still alive when found, but sadly died. From Inquirer.net. Last week, representatives of some 50 countries attended the third meeting of the International Cooperation on Migratory Sharks (SHARKS III) hosted by the Philippines in Manila. Eleven of them signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) pledging to protect the whale sharks.

From July 6-8, there was a European conference in Larnaca about illegal bird killing , organized by Terra Cypria. Scottish Judge Implies Wildlife Crime Not That Important

Sheriff Kevin Drummond is claimed to have told a police conference on wildlife crime last month that offences against animals were not even “on the second page” after serious crimes such as robbery and assault. Lots of jerks in the news lately.
