In fact, indeed one or two of the Japanese-language bird books I own have this species on their cover. Another attractive species on offer is the Chinese White-browed Rosefinch. According to reports in the media , a recording from 1987 recently rediscovered by researchers has captured a Musk Duck ( Biziura lobata ) in Australia repeatedly uttering the phrase “You bloody fool” as part of its courtship display, apparently having picked up this impolite exclamation by mimicking overheard human speech.

Between staying warm/cool, finding food, avoiding predators, migrating thousands of miles every year, finding mates, raising chicks and doing all this at the mercy of the elements, it makes sense that they have more brainpower than just simple instinct to run on. I look forward to more research being done in this field.

I have written about the interesting sex life of these jacanas a few times already (short version: female mates with male, lays a bunch of eggs for him to incubate and raise the chicks, leaves him, finds another male, repeat). Swinhoe’s White-eye was just promoted to the rank of a full species in 2018.
