Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

Costa Rica is situated right between two oceans. The pair of seas are close enough for the occasional adventurous frigatebird to just soar way up and right over to the other salty basin. We had looks at Semiplumbeous Hawk , White-necked Puffbird , toucans, parrots, hundreds of migrating Mississippi Kites , and several other birdies.

Heading south on a good surfaced road, we made slow progress through the herds of cattle, donkeys and goats that thronged the highway, until we finally reached the land of the Konso. Quality time was spent with a friendly Hamar family at their homestead of grass huts surrounding their cattle corral.

The rain made it to Broome!

The average annual rainfall for Broome is around 500mm and we receive that rainfall over a few months in the summer, which is right now. A local cattle station out of town received 652mm in the same 24 hour period, so we got off lightly! Red-winged Parrot feeding on seeds. It is a slow process sorting out the flood damage.

The population of parrotlets they studied was located on one of the many huge hatos (cattle ranches) in the Venezuelan llanos, a vast swath of flat flooded savannah in the central third of the country that drains into the Rio Orinoco.
