Still, I was nervous when I pushed a collection of highly-qualified friends (four ornithologists and a botany professor) to accompany me to the small San José de las Torres reservoir, just above the city of Morelia. Mexican Ducks were also present; these are residents in the area, but not normally on this body of water.

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

The fence-lines were also good roost sites for the many Whiskered Terns and the majority of the ducks in the deeper water were Pacific Black Ducks and Hard Heads. Grey Teal roosted around a dam alongside Black-fronted Dotterels and Red-kneed Dotterels and Australian Pratincoles were well-camouflaged amongst the cattle.

Even collecting one piece after another, I didn’t manage to see the whole picture, but after a lot of effort, I collected enough pieces to ID the Eastern Olivaceous Warbler , only the first of a dozen that will be chock chock chocking from fruiting mulberries.

The star of such huge concentrations is the massive Jabiru , towering over a diverse collection of South American waterbirds such as Sunbittern , Plumbeous Ibis , and Southern Screamer. Screamers are most closely related to waterfowl such as ducks and geese. Crossing them was like taking a leap of faith each time.
