We were driving up to northwestern Michigan from our homes in Ohio (me) and West ByGod Virginia (Geoff) in search of a bird species that would be a lifer for both of us: the Bohemian Waxwing. A wide-open field in a wind-protected spot, recently visited by both mechanical and living manure-spreaders. This was Snow Bunting heaven.

Birders know that the light’s not always perfect or even particularly good when you’re trying to tell one species from another. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting.
