Though they weight less than two ounces, Least Terns migrate from South America to the West, East, and Gulf Coast to breed on dunes or flat gravel roofs (there are also populations in the middle of the United States). There is no mistaking a Least Tern: they were back!

The Tennessee Warbler is a poster child for the boreal forests of Canada and the far northern United States. Its population actually fluctuates in response to the availability of Spruce Budworm and though it nests on the ground it is entirely inseparable from the forests of the north during breeding season.

They are fiercely territorial on breeding territory, but in migration they often gather in rather large numbers. Eastern Kingbirds breed across the eastern United States and much of southern Canada. Buff-breasted Sandpipers are hardy little birds, migrating yearly between their grassland wintering grounds in South America and their tundra breeding grounds in the high Arctic. The only thing that could have made the experience with Tryngites subruficollis better would have been some sunlight. What great little birds!

They have expanded their range through Indonesia and into Australia and is found in post breeding dispersal as far north as South Korea and Japan. The following decades continued the great expansion, and it was recorded breeding in Canada in 1962 and Chile by 1970. There are two main subspecies, the nominate B. coromandus.

The question is why these natives of rural areas in southern South America (east of the Andes) have been so spectacularly successful in establishing their colonies. Again, not very fussy!

For some reason, Yale University Press discontinued its arrangement with Helms, so there is no United States edition.
