Penguins, Parrots and Wine on Matiu / Somes Island

As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. At night we had planned to go out looking for Blue Penguins , around 600 of which make the island their breeding home.

However, there are those species which have a hard time bringing attention to themselves such as Yellow-shouldered Blackbird , Giant Nuthatch , and Vinaceous-breasted Parrot. Other endangered and vulnerable species we observed at this preserve included Red-browed Parrot , Ochre-marked Parakeet , and White-necked Hawk.
